Frequently asked questions about heart rate zones.
What are heart rate zones used for?
Heart rate zones help match workout intensity to your training goal. Lower zones are useful for recovery and aerobic base building, while higher zones support threshold work, VO2 max training, and short high-intensity efforts.
Why does this calculator ask for resting heart rate?
It uses the Karvonen method, which adjusts your zones based on heart rate reserve rather than age alone. That usually gives a more personalized result than the simple 220 minus age approach.
How do I find my resting heart rate?
Measure your pulse for a full minute after waking up, before caffeine, exercise, or major stress. Taking several morning readings and averaging them usually gives a more reliable resting heart rate.
Is 220 minus age my true max heart rate?
Not necessarily. It is only a rough population estimate. Actual max heart rate can vary significantly between people of the same age, which is why zone calculators should be treated as starting points rather than exact prescriptions.
Should I train in Zone 5 often?
Usually no. Zone 5 is highly demanding and is best used in limited doses for advanced intervals or sport-specific work. Most endurance and general fitness programs spend much more time in Zones 1 through 3.
