Frequently asked questions about bmi calculator.
What is BMI?
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is a simple screening formula that compares your weight to your height to estimate whether your body size falls into underweight, normal, overweight, or obesity categories.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. In imperial units, it is calculated using weight in pounds, height in inches, and a conversion factor.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
Not perfectly. BMI is useful for population-level screening, but it does not directly measure body fat, muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution. Athletes, very muscular people, older adults, and some ethnic groups may need additional context.
What BMI range is considered healthy?
For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the normal or healthy range. A BMI below 18.5 is classed as underweight, while higher values fall into overweight or obesity ranges.
Should I make health decisions based on BMI alone?
No. BMI is best used alongside waist circumference, body composition, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, fitness, and overall health history rather than as a standalone diagnosis.
