Touch Typing Lessons for Beginners: Where to Start and What to Expect
Home Row Foundation
Touch typing starts with the home row: ASDF for the left hand, JKL; for the right hand. Every finger returns to these keys between keystrokes. The 'bumps' on F and J are tactile guides. Mastering home row first prevents bad habits that are hard to unlearn later.
Progressive Lesson Structure
Lesson 1–5: home row keys only. Lesson 6–10: top row (QWERTY). Lesson 11–15: bottom row (ZXCV). Lesson 16–20: numbers and symbols. Lesson 21+: full keyboard practice with words and sentences. Each stage should feel comfortable before advancing.
Timeline Expectations
Week 1–2: home row mastery, 20–30 WPM. Month 1: full keyboard reach, 35–45 WPM. Month 2–3: building speed, 50–65 WPM. Month 6: fluency, 70–90 WPM. After 1 year of regular practice: 90–120+ WPM.
