SSL Certificate Checker: What to Look For and Common Problems

Sunil Kalikayi4/8/20265 min read

What SSL Checker Verifies

Certificate validity: is it trusted by browsers? Expiry date: when does it expire? Subject Alternative Names (SANs): which domains does it cover (www vs. non-www, subdomains)? Certificate chain: are all intermediate certificates properly configured? Issuing CA: is it a trusted certificate authority?

Common SSL Problems

Expired certificate: browsers show 'Your connection is not private'. Domain mismatch: certificate issued for example.com but accessed as www.example.com (or vice versa). Missing intermediate certificate: chain incomplete — some browsers accept, others don't. Self-signed certificate: valid for local development, causes browser warnings in production.

SSL and SEO

HTTPS has been a ranking signal since 2014. Sites without valid SSL certificates lose rankings compared to equivalent HTTPS sites. Certificate expiry causes immediate SEO damage — browsers block users, bounce rates spike, and crawlers may not access the site. Set renewal reminders 30 days before expiry.
