How to Track Your Pregnancy Week by Week
How Pregnancy Weeks Are Counted
Pregnancy is counted from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), not conception. This means you're technically 2 weeks pregnant when conception occurs. Full term is 40 weeks from LMP.
Calculating Your Due Date
Due date (EDD) = LMP + 280 days (Naegele's rule). If you know your conception date, add 266 days. Ultrasound dating overrides LMP calculations if there's a discrepancy of more than 5–7 days.
The Three Trimesters
First trimester (Weeks 1–12): Organ development, highest miscarriage risk. Second trimester (Weeks 13–27): Growth accelerates, movement begins, energy improves. Third trimester (Weeks 28–40): Rapid weight gain, lung maturation, preparation for birth.
Baby Size Milestones by Week
Week 4: Poppy seed (0.1 cm). Week 8: Raspberry (1.6 cm, 1g). Week 12: Lime (5.4 cm, 14g). Week 20: Banana (25 cm, 300g). Week 28: Eggplant (37.6 cm, 1kg). Week 36: Honeydew (47.4 cm, 2.6kg). Week 40: Watermelon (51 cm, 3.5kg).
Key Prenatal Appointments
8–10 weeks: First ultrasound (heartbeat confirmed, dating). 11–14 weeks: Nuchal translucency scan (chromosomal screening). 18–20 weeks: Anatomy scan (gender possible, organ checks). 24–28 weeks: Glucose tolerance test (gestational diabetes). 36+ weeks: Weekly checks, Group B strep test.
Symptoms to Track Each Trimester
T1: Nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness, frequent urination. T2: Round ligament pain, heartburn, fetal movement. T3: Braxton Hicks contractions, back pain, shortness of breath. Track kick counts from week 28: 10 kicks within 2 hours.
