How to Check Mic Input Levels for Professional Recordings — A Level-Setting Guide
Why Input Level Setting Matters for Recording Quality
Recording at too low a level means the useful signal is buried in the noise floor. Recording at too high a level causes digital clipping which sounds harsh and cannot be fixed in post. The goal is to record as loud as possible without clipping.
How to Use Mic Test for Level Setting
Open Mic Test and monitor the level meter while speaking at the loudest volume you expect to use during the recording. The peak level should reach about 70 to 80% of maximum. If it clips, lower the input gain. If it barely moves, raise the input gain.
Setting Input Gain in Different Systems
On Mac: System Preferences > Sound > Input. Drag the Input Volume slider. On Windows: Settings > Sound > Input > Device Properties. On external audio interfaces: Use the physical gain knobs.
